You can use all the ESR mapping features in the foreground or in the background, with your screen on or off (to save on battery).

But, you'll definitely want to keep your screen on when using the ESR app to see your group ride members and when following a route.

Because keeping your Android screen on while riding uses a lot of battery, many Android devices will shut your screen off for you automatically. Don't worry, here are a few tips for keeping your screen on!

To keep your screen on, you'll need to turn off Battery Optimization, here's how:

  • Open Settings menu

  • Tap Apps > All apps > ESR > Battery > Change to Unrestricted  (this will keep ESR from going to sleep in the foreground and background)

You may also need to turn off 'Pause app activity if unused' to keep the screen on while recording, here's how:

  • Open Settings menu

  • Tap Apps > All apps > ESR >Turn off the option 'Pause app activity if unused'

You may want to Disable Smart Stay (Available only on some Android devices) to force your screen to stay on while recording a ride, here's how:

The “Smart Stay” feature keeps your screen on when you're looking at it but if you're wearing sunglasses or even a helmet, it's not smart enough to know you're looking at it and will turn your screen off.  If you have issues keeping your screen on with sunglasses and/or a helmet, you'll want to disable it. Follow these steps:
  • Go to Settings app
  • Advanced features > Motion and gesturesSmart stay > Disable
