CRASHLIGHT® is built-in technology that automatically detects a motorcycle crash and notifies three pre-set contacts of your last known location.

In the event of a crash or emergency, CRASHLIGHT® enables you to choose your safety team.

With no additional devices required, the technology leverages sensors available in your smartphone to automatically detect a motorcycle crash and share your location with your pre-set contacts.

CRASHLIGHT® was developed specifically for motorcycle riders and the technology is available exclusively in the ESR app.

How CRASHLIGHT® works

When a crash is detected, CRASHLIGHT® activates a three-minute timer. Once the timer reaches zero, notifications with the rider's last known geographical location are sent to three pre-set contacts.

CRASHLIGHT® provides three ways to deliver alerts to ensure that emergency messages get through; notifications can be configured for delivery by automated phone calls, SMS text messages, and emails.

CRASHLIGHT® Timer & CRASHLIGHT® Notification Options

To detect a crash, CRASHLIGHT® uses the accelerometer, gyroscope, and GPS technology in your smartphone combined with software developed in collaboration with the University of Toronto's School of Mechanical Engineering.

CRASHLIGHT® does not activate if you simply drop the device or ride aggressively. When a crash is detected, CRASHLIGHT® will notify three pre-set contacts with your location and emergency information so that they can immediately dispatch the most appropriate emergency services to you.

You choose your safety team, and you can change your CRASHLIGHT® contacts at any time, as many times as you'd like.

CRASHLIGHT® FAQ

Where do I need to carry my smartphone when riding?

The best place to store your smartphone is in a breast pocket because, in the event of a crash, a rider can separate from their bike. Your device can also be fixed to the handlebars, carried in a tank bag or in a pannier.

On the handlebars (depending on your bike), vibration or 'noise' may affect the sensors and cause false detection. Should you experience a false crash detection, we advise adjusting your CRASHLIGHT® mode to LOW.

What are CRASHLIGHT® modes?

CRASHLIGHT® modes enable you to adjust the algorithm's sensitivity to HIGH (default), MEDIUM, or LOW. This can be helpful if the way that you store your device or ride your bike tends to vary.

For instance, riding a deep roaring cruiser or doing intense riding (e.g. adventure riding or dirt bike riding) would require lower sensor sensitivity; in this case, you can set your CRASHLIGHT® mode to LOW.

For normal riding with the device in your breast pocket, set your CRASHLIGHT® mode to HIGH.

Our recommendation to you is to leave the CRASHLIGHT® mode on HIGH to start. If you experience a false alarm during a ride, try changing the sensitivity to MEDIUM and then to LOW depending on where you carry the device.

To learn more, check out our article CRASHLIGHT® modes.

Will CRASHLIGHT® be activated if I drop my phone?

No. The CRASHLIGHT® algorithms listen for a complex sequence of events in order to detect a crash. The multi-signal algorithm means CRASHLIGHT® will not be activated if the rider drops their smartphone or comes to a hard stop.

Can I cancel a CRASHLIGHT® notification if I'm OK?

Yes, once activated you have three minutes to cancel CRASHLIGHT® notifications. If CRASHLIGHT® is not cancelled before the timer runs out, emergency contacts will be notified via phone call, SMS, and email with the rider's last known GPS coordinates so that immediate action can be taken.

To cancel a false alarm, simply drag the circular icon below the timer to the far right side of your screen.

Canceling a CRASHLIGHT® False Alarm

If you experience a false alarm with CRASHLIGHT®, you can always contact the ESR Team for help by sending us a note in the ESR app > Profile > Settings > Get Support. Or, you can email us at feedback@eatsleepride.com.

Is my location kept private in the event of an emergency notification?

Yes. Only those you choose to be notified will see your last known location. You choose your safety team and your data is kept strictly private to them. Your location can only be viewed and shared by your pre-set contacts.

Can I test CRASHLIGHT®?

Yes, once you've subscribed to CRASHLIGHT®, test notifications can be sent to your CRASHLIGHT® contacts. To test CRASHLIGHT®, simply tap the "TEST CRASHLIGHT®" button on the feature's landing page.

What devices can CRASHLIGHT® run on?

The EatSleepRIDE Motorcycle GPS app and CRASHLIGHT® are available for both Android and iOS devices. You can run the EatSleepRIDE app on any device with a cellular and data plan.

How is CRASHLIGHT® tested?

We've worked with public and private sector crash scientists to map normal motorcycle riding against typical single vehicles, multi-vehicle, low-side, and high-side motorcycle crashes.

More than 50 testers in 10 countries put in thousands of miles collecting data, and we continually conduct both simulated and actual crash tests to verify the crash detection technology.

To learn more about how CRASHLIGHT® tests work, check out the ESR article Behind The Scenes - Discovery Channel Tests CRASHLIGHT® which details how Lucas Cochran (host of Discovery Channel's Future Tech) tests the feature himself!

When riding outside of my coverage area, am I charged long-distance fees by my carrier for CRASHLIGHT® notifications?

No. There are no additional fees charged by your carrier for CRASHLIGHT® notifications. However, when roaming, you are responsible for your standard cellular and data network roaming fees.

What happens when I ride out of cell phone range?

CRASHLIGHT® requires an active cellular and data network and a reliable GPS signal to work effectively. When a smartphone is connected to a cellular and data network, CRASHLIGHT® will make calls and send messages on behalf of the rider. If the mobile device can't connect to a cellular and data network, it can not.

However, when CRASHLIGHT® is activated in a weak coverage area, it is designed to automatically repeat connection attempts until notifications are sent successfully.

Why is there an annual subscription cost?

The CRASHLIGHT® technology sends emergency information to your contacts via SMS, voice call, and email in any country across any border. CRASHLIGHT® notifications must be queued and sent through a network provider to guarantee delivery.

Every time a notification is sent, be it a test or a real notification, a cost is incurred by EatSleepRIDE. To make the service available and to sustain development, we charge a minimal annual fee.

As Jeff Besos says “There are two kinds of companies, those that work to try to charge more and those that work to charge less. We will be second.”

We've worked very hard to keep costs down and to make the CRASHLIGHT® technology accessible to everyone.

Will CRASHLIGHT auto-renew?

For iOS, the CRASHLIGHT® subscription will NOT renew automatically. It will ask for permission to subscribe for another year after 12 months.

For Android, your monthly and annual subscriptions will auto-renew. The user may choose to unsubscribe at will.

To cancel or edit your CRASHLIGHT® subscription, please refer to our help articles for iOS users or Android users.

How was CRASHLIGHT® developed?

The EatSleepRIDE team worked very closely with a group of University of Toronto mechanical and physical engineers and esteemed government and private sector crash scene scientists to develop the crash detection technology.

As part of the ongoing development of the technology, we work with hundreds of riders in more than 10 countries to extensively map normal motorcycle riding against all types of motorcycle crashes including single-vehicle, low-side, and high-side as well as multi-vehicle crashes to create sophisticated crash detection software.

Authors of the most influential and comprehensive motorcycle crash study of the 20th century, the Hurt Report, were also consulted.

How were EatSleepRIDE Motorcycle GPS App and CRASHLIGHT® made possible?

This project was made possible in part by the Canadian Media Fund and the multitude of beta testers and friends who ride. We'd like to thank everyone for their invaluable support.

Is CRASHLIGHT® available on Android?

Yes. CRASHLIGHT® is available on both iOS and Android devices.
